Cindy's Family History

Family Business

The reason I am working in the field that I am is mainly because of my Mom. Approximately 30 plus years ago, I started working overnights at a home on Foskett Ave., my Mom worked there and she suggested I apply. She loved working there with the clients, I would work overnights and days when needed. I got to know the ladies that lived there, Sandy, Diane, Nancy, Stephanie to name a few. I loved the job! However, working overnights with young children started to take its toll after a few months.

Even though I no longer work at the home, I would always see the clients as I would go there a couple times a week when my Mom was working, to visit.

Through the years my Mom worked at the different homes and I would meet different clients, she loved her job. Eventually, she came to work at the Polk County DAC.  She absolutely loved it and she had her favorite people she would mention (not by name) but eventually I knew who they were (Shirley and Ashley C.) as I worked at a few of the different homes through the years.

My Mom could no longer work as she was diagnosed with Cancer and on 1/7/11 she passed.

I applied at the DAC a few different times, the last time I applied I finally got a call back! I was hired, my Mom was my main motivation for wanting to work here, but another good reason was now my partner in crime for the last umpteen years worked here! Nanette, she didn’t think I could handle the job, I proved her wrong! My first office was even the one my Mom had, I felt comfortable like I had a connection with her by having the same office.

My first week working I saw a pen taped to a window, which I found out it belonged to co-worker Kim, my Mom had taped it up there as a joke. Up until a month ago that pen still hung there.

I love working here at the DAC with all the staff and clients. It has its moments but what job doesn’t. I am at home here, we are a Family!
